Gingerbread House

Made this house with my oldest son and daughter. I didn't like the (natural) lighting in the room, so I put the house on the stove top and turned on the little light that is right above. It kinda worked nicely, don't you think?

Picnic XI!

Pingu and I hosted our 11th Multi-Cultural Food Picnic.

My Chicken Wings with Onion Sauce 手羽玉炒め煮
This dish received eight votes and unofficially came in the second place, but I had to disqualify myself. :) I was pleased that the chicken was sold out so quickly. :D Thank you!

Pingu's Teriyaki Flat Iron Steak on Rice

My Hijiki Rice ひじきの混ぜご飯
This one "unofficially" won the 3rd prize. I can't believe people liked both of my dishes and have mixed feelings! Before becoming a mom, I used to spend so much more time preparing my food for the picnic. This time, I spent SO LITTLE TIME making the chicken wings and this rice dish, but they turned out to be very popular. :o Pretty ironic, isn't it? (^^;)

We had 27 amazing dishes!

Here's the result of this year's contest!

Main Dish Category:
1st Texas Brisket (USA)

2nd Spicy Pork with Pickled Vegetable (China)

3rd Ribs (USA)

Dessert Category:
1st Almond Torte (Portugal)

2nd Apple Crisp (USA)

3rd Apple Tart (country unknown)

Roasted Tofu

This is very easy to make, and it turned out pretty close to 厚揚げ atsuage (deep-fried tofu)! I couldn't believe it.

How to roast tofu@CHOW

I didn't want to mix the greasy tofu with my hand, so I used Small Silicone Spatula. I love the raspberry color, and this tiny spatula is convenient for doing many little things.

Orange Beef Meatballs with Cauliflower

My lunch today. I made this up by combining whatever I found in my fridge and freezer. With frozen meatballs, pre-steamed cauliflower, pre-chopped green onion and a bottle of Panda Express orange sauce, it only took a few minutes to prepare this.

Spinach & Orange Salad

I've been wanting to try the new garlic press that OXO gave me recently and decided to make this spinach salad with mikan. It wasn't bad. Pingu was surprised that the salad dressing had no oil.

Dressing ingredients:
3 tbsp. red wine vinegar
1 garlic clove - pressed, of course
1/2 tsp. dry basil
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. country dijon mustard
black pepper
nutmeg

Old model (left) & new model (right)
Mr. Old wasn't so happy first and a bit jealous of the newcomer, but now they happily stay together in my kitchen drawer.

It was fun to try using the brand-new garlic press. It looks like it can hold more than one clove of garlic and is easier to press. I also like the handle part since it doesn't hold water after washing unlike the old model.

Pingu let me pick my favorite chocolate at See's Candies as a Valentine's gift. :D
